MICROSOFT ROLLS OUT MSN 8 SOFTWARE

Readies Largest Marketing Push for Internet Service

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- MSN 8, Microsoft Corp.'s latest software version supporting its MSN Internet portal, is getting a limited release starting this week.

MSN, which has 7.7 million Internet access subscribers, is offering MSN 8 as a subscription service to subscribers through either dial-up or broadband connections.

controls for the first time and new e-mail management features, as well as free versions of Microsoft personal finance, photo-editing and encyclopedia software with a $21.95 subscription.

Microsoft will also make MSN 8 available to consumers who use a different Internet service provider, such as AOL Time Warner's America Online, but want to make use of MSN 8 services.

MSN has 7.7 millions subscribers vs. AOL's 34 million.

Microsoft said it will launch its biggest global ad and marketing campaign ever for MSN 8. That effort, from Interpublic Group of Cos.' McCann-Erickson Worldwide, San Francisco, is expected to fire off by early September.
