John Legere Tweets 'Total Chaos At Sprint'

Late last night, reports surfaced that Sprint, the nation's third-largest wireless carrier, had abandoned its pursuit of T-Mobile. Then, this morning Sprint announced it was replacing Dan Hesse, its CEO since 2007, with Marcelo Claure, a member of Sprint's board who has never run a wireless operator. Neither Sprint nor T-Mobile has offered an official comment on the abandoned merger.

Yet T-Mobile's always-colorful CEO John Legere seems to have plenty of opinions on his company's one-time suitor. Mr. Legere has posted a series of comments on Twitter criticizing Sprint.

Today's Twitter posts are par for the course for the executive, who joined the carrier in September of 2012 and soon displayed his predilection for frequent, trash-talking social media missives. T-Mobile staff have insisted Mr. Legere's posts are unscripted.

After T-Mobile launched its 'Uncarrier' campaign, in March 2013, the fourth-placed operator initially targeted AT&T, which once bid for T-Mobile as well (and hosts a network from which T-Mobile can more easily nab subscribers).

Quickly, T-Mobile extended its combative arsenal to other major rivals, Verizon and Sprint. Mr. Legere grew fond of the Twitter hashtag "#FruckedUp," a play on Sprint's new 'Framily' plan offering. He also teased Sprint's endorser Pharrell Williams, posting a favored fan art sent his way, a T-Mobile spokeswoman said.

Last week, Sprint reported its most profitable quarter in seven years, but also posted net losses of 220,000 subscribers, a hemorrhaging dogging the carrier since it began a major network overhaul two years ago.

"In the short-term, we will focus on becoming extremely cost efficient and competing aggressively in the marketplace," Mr. Claure said in a statement. "While consolidating makes sense in the long-term, for now, we will focus on growing and repositioning Sprint."
