Hackers blitz English Al Jazeera

By Published on .

[Washington] Arab satellite news channel Al Jazeera tried to launch a temporary English-language Web site last week for its coverage of the war in Iraq, but few have been able to see it at http:/english.aljazeera.net or anywhere else. According to published reports, hackers blitzed the site, hijacked the domain name and posted fake content such as a stars-and-stripes logo with the words "Let Freedom Ring." Al Jazeera's broadcasts have been criticized in the U.S. and U.K. for showing captured and dead American soldiers. Late last week, attempts to reach both the main Al Jazeera site and the English-language version were very slow and ended in error messages. At presstime, Al Jazeera executives were still unclear about what was happening to their site and when it would be fixed.
