Mickey Mouse Goes Bollywood

As Part of Broad Push, Disney Brings Characters to Delhi and Mumbai for Sold-out Live Shows

That great American cultural institution, Mickey Mouse, is now trying to make it in India. Disney has sent Mickey, Minnie Mouse and a host of our characters to the subcontinent for a two-city roadshow. "The Mickey Mouse Show," which features the characters dressed up in Indian garb and singing Hindi-language songs from Bollywood films, sold out nine shows in Delhi and is set to move on to Mumbai.

It's part of a push by Disney to familiarize Indian kids with the Mouse as well as to promote other Disney projects in the region. For instance, the live show co-stars characters from Disney's first Indian project, "Roadside Romeo."

"The show is an effort to build a family entertainment brand in India," a Disney spokesperson told the Indian news site afaqs.com. "We are increasing the relevance of our stories and characters to the local audience."

The Afaqs story added that Disney has been doing outreach at the country's schools and malls.
