NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- John Quelch, a well-known marketing professor at Harvard Business School and a member of WPP Group's board of directors, is moving to Shanghai and will become dean of China's leading business school, known as CEIBS, in February.
The school, whose full name is China Europe International Business School, has campuses in Shanghai and Beijing and a center in Shenzhen. Like most things in China, business schools operate on a large scale, and CEIBS graduates more than 1,000 MBAs and executive MBAs a year and offers management and leadership courses to working executives. Mr. Quelch was a visiting professor at CEIBS in 2009.
Mr. Quelch has written widely on global business practice, especially international marketing and the role of multinational corporations. In China, there has been a proliferation of business schools, but the quality varies greatly. The Economist noted in a recent story that CEIBS prepares students for careers at multinational firms, not just state-owned enterprises as some Chinese business schools do.
Mr. Quelch, who is British, has spent much of his career in the U.S., most recently at Harvard Business School. He returned to the U.K. in 1998 to become dean of the London Business School for three years, and in 1988 he also joined the WPP board, becoming a valuable resource for international marketing expertise for Martin Sorrell.
