For the third year in a row, SMZ Advertising employees helped the Old Newsboys' Goodfellows Fund of Detroit with its No Kiddie Without a Christmas effort by dressing dolls and teddy bears. The campaign has been the Goodfellows' primary goal since 1914.
This year, the organization will provide 26,000 holiday gift packages for Detroit kids ages 4 to 13. The packages include jeans, sweatshirts, socks, underwear, winter hats, gloves, toys, books, games, candy and a dental kit. It will also give out 13,000 hand-dressed dolls to girls 4 to 11 and. for the first time, 900 teddy bears to 4-year-old boys.
The Goodfellows provide dolls and bears, and volunteers in the community dress them in clothes they provide, both bought and handmade. SMZ staff dressed more than 30 dolls and teddy bears and included various themed outfits such as princesses, fairies, sports fans and athletes.
"It's very special having so many in the SMZ family take part in the Detroit Goodfellows No Kiddie Without a Christmas Program," said SMZ Exec VP and Detroit Goodfellows President Debbie Michelson, in a statement. "As a third-generation member of both SMZ and the Detroit Goodfellows, I'm proud that our employees have embraced this wonderful tradition. And they told me they had a lot of fun doing it."
Other Detroit Goodfellows programs include camperships, a scholarship to Wayne State University's School of Journalism and a shoe program, which help an additional 3,000 children.
SMZ has done pro bono work for the Goodfellows for 60 years.
