Dining at Elaine's former Vogue and Harper's Bazaar beauty editor Shirley Lord, looking blond and yummy, with bow-tied husband Abe Rosenthal of The New York Times. Shirley, who made her bones on Fleet Street, then married British zillionaire and "carpet king" Cyril Lord, lived palatially in the better West Indies, and wrote lots of novels, tells me she's recently been in the employ of Sam Waksal, Martha Stewart's bete noir. Could all that be the stuff of Shirley's next novel? A miniseries? Shirley gave a sly smile but, judiciously, said nothing.

Karon Cullen's the new PR consultant for one of the great hotels in the world, the Crillon in Paris. Its staff uniforms are designed by Thierry Mugler. The hotel's bar is where the better class of Brit foreign correspondents drink.
