About That Final 'Sopranos' Scene ...

Published on .

David Chase Speaks!
The Star Ledger's Alan Sepinwall arranged to do a post-mortem interview with 'Sopranos' creator David Chase before the final season even began, and so he's the first to report exactly what Chase was thinking when he edited that final "fade to black" scene. "No one was trying to be audacious, honest to God," Chase said. "We did what we thought we had to do. No one was trying to blow people's minds, or thinking, 'Wow, this'll [tick] them off.' People get the impression that you're trying to [mess] with them and it's not true. You're trying to entertain them." As for what it means? "I have no interest in explaining, defending, reinterpreting or adding to what is there," he says of the final scene. Later he added: "Anybody who wants to watch it, it's all there."
