So what to expect? The networks are promising a businesslike approach to this year's upfront presentations, so expect more nuts-and-bolts pitches from the likes of ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox. CBS and NBC are promising to point out the many ways marketers can spend money with them beyond broadcast TV spots, and we won't be surprised at all when ABC, Fox and CW talk up their other assets, too. Turner, Univision and ESPN will also pitch their wares this week with breakfast and lunch events.
And media buyers, take heart: After years of complaints about their elaborate, star-filled fall-schedule-presentation extravaganzas followed by crowded red-carpet parties, the broadcast TV networks have finally gotten the message. CBS has done away with its party. ABC has toned its way down, and CW is combining its presentation with a cocktail party. NBC plans a party in the Summer Garden after its NBC Universal Experience at 30 Rock, but only Fox seems committed to throwing a bash on par with years past. Luckily, it ends the week's festivities, so anyone who misses the hoopla can grab a bit of glamour before they go.
