To mark Independence Day—and the freedom of the press, while we still have it—the New York Daily News has put one Donald J. Trump on its cover today. It refers to him as "The clown who plays king," and serves up an illustration to match.

In a piece titled "Our immigrants, ourselves: What Trump can't take away from this great nation," the paper's reliably anti-Trump editorial board writes, in part,

President Trump's cruelty in deflecting entry of desperate migrants ... coincides with measures to choke legal channels for immigration, drying up needed fresh vigor for America before our eyes.

All told, visas have declined 12% from their prior volume since Trump's inauguration—for business, school and travel that are part of this nation's lifeblood. Green-card holders once waited two months or so for naturalization; now the citizenship process drags on for eight or more. ... The Declaration of Independence spoke to such arbitrary cruelty, against an arrogant monarch who "has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither…"

The President who plays king won't conquer the bedrock values this nation was founded on.
