CNN Aims To Boost Ad Exposure in GOP Debate With Live Stream

CNN is looking to give advertisers in the upcoming Republican debate some extra exposure with a live stream of the debate available online for free.

The Sept. 16 GOP brawl will be available online and across all of CNN's mobile platforms. Viewers will not need to have a pay-TV subscription in order to access the stream, which can be accessed between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. that night.

Typically, in order to stream CNN viewers would need to log-in to their cable or satellite service.

"We've had huge advertiser interest across platforms for the debate, and by opening up the free preview, this will give advertisers additional exposure across platforms," a spokeswoman said via email.

The ads appearing in the stream will not be the same as those that appear in the linear broadcast, a spokeswoman said.

Commercials will be dynamically inserted on all CNN digital platforms, including its CNN Go service, "which offers additional revenue," the spokeswoman said. She added that a majority of the ad deals for the debate were sold cross-platform.

CNN has been fetching about $200,000 for a 30-second spot in the linear airing of the debate, according to media buyers.

This isn't the first time a live stream has been offered in this way. CNN did stream some of the debates during the 2012 presidential cycle, but this was at the early stage of TV Everywhere, and the streams were used to promote the service.
