Rockstar Games' detective mystery "L.A. Noire" outsold the competition in May, a light month for physical video-game sales at retail, according to NPD Group research.

Consumers' video-game purchases are increasingly occurring in digital format, NPD said, but the main reason for low physical sales at retail -- the lowest, in fact, since October 2006 -- was a lighter slate of new releases. The industry released 42 new SKU's in May, less than half as many as May 2010.

"L.A. Noire," a well-received PS3 and Xbox game, was followed by "Brink," "Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game," "Portal 2" and April's top-seller at retail, "Mortal Kombat 2011."

"Call of Duty: Black Ops," already the best-selling video game in U.S. history, kept hanging around on the chart in May even though it's been out since November. May also saw a new digital release in the "Black Ops" family, a downloadable map pack called "Escalation," which may have shifted some dollars that would have been spent at retail, NPD said.
