Netflix, expanding further into exclusive feature films, will produce four movies with comic actor Adam Sandler.
Mr. Sandler's Happy Madison Productions will work with Netflix, the world's largest subscription video service, to develop the films, according to the deal announced today. The movies will premiere only to customers in the almost 50 countries where the streaming service operates.
The accord accelerates a drive by Netflix to add its own motion pictures to an expanding lineup that includes first-run series, newer and vintage movies and TV programs, as well as documentaries and shows for kids. The company announced plans this week for its first feature film in a venture with Weinstein Co., a sequel to the Oscar-winning "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" that Netflix wants to release on IMAX screens the same day the movie becomes available for streaming. Theater owners have already protested that plan, but the Sandler movies won't seek theatrical release.
"People love Adam's films on Netflix and often watch them again and again," Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement. "His appeal spans across viewers of all ages -- everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line -- not just in the U.S. but all over the world."
