NBC's "Peter Pan Live" didn't fly as high as last year's live musical event, with less than half the amount of people who watched the network's "The Sound of Music Live" tuning in this time around.
"Peter Pan Live" was watched by an average of 9.1 million people, compared with 18.5 million for "The Sound of Music." In the all-important 18-to-49 demographic, the musical pulled a 2.3 rating, also significantly below the 4.6 ratings "Sound of Music" pulled in the demo. A ratings point is equivalent to 1% of homes with TVs.
But Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, said the network never expected "Peter Pan Live" to have the same reach as "Sound of Music."
"We're very pleased with the 'Peter Pan' ratings and it was a great night for NBC," he said in a statement. "We won every hour, which hasn't happened on Thursday with entertainment programming since a year ago."
"We didn't expect to reach the same rating as The Sound of Music since that was the first live movie event of its kind in over 50 years," he added.
It's worth noting that "Peter Pan Live" more than doubled NBC's Thursday-night season average, excluding sports, in the 18-to-49-year-old demo.
NBC is already working on its next live musical. Earlier in the year it announced it will produce "Music Man Live" for 2015. The network is also reportedly considering a live staging of the play "A Few Good Men."
