'Pokemon' Displaces 'Call of Duty: Black Ops' Atop Monthly Video Game Sales

March Sales Decline From March 2010, Which Saw 'God of War' and Other Big Releases

"Call of Duty: Black Ops," still the best-selling video game in U.S. history, finally slipped from its perch atop the monthly video game sales chart in March, falling to fifth place by physical retail unit sales, according to NPD Group research.

New releases "Pokemon White Version" and "Pokemon Black Version" for the Nintendo DS took first and second place in March. They were followed by "Homefront" and "Dragon Age II," new releases for consoles.

Overall unit sales, however, fell from March 2010 to March 2011. "Software sales last year were marked by several marquee titles including 'Final Fantasy XIII,' 'Battlefield: Bad Company 2' and 'God of War 3,' which were all million-plus unit sellers in March 2010," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

NPD's monthly sales data covers just physical sales at retail, not downloads through services including Xbox Live, PlayStation Network or Steam.
