Prince Was Not a Big Ad Man, but He Stole the Show at Super Bowl

Prince, who was born Prince Rogers Nelson in 1958 in Minnesota and died Thursday, was widely considered one of the most influential musicians in popular music, blending pop, funk, soul, R&B and rock in a way few had done before. A prolific artist, releasing nearly 40 albums since his debut in 1978, Prince was perhaps best known for the "Purple Rain" movie and soundtrack, along with hits such as "Kiss" and "Little Red Corvette."

In more recent years, he was well known for his halftime show at the 2007 Super Bowl, sponsored by Pepsi, a performance that many are sharing on social media in the wake of his death, with some calling it one of the best halftime performances ever.

He also famously battled his record label, Warner Bros., in the 90s, calling himself a "slave" -- a word he scribbled on his cheek in public appearances -- to the label, as it demanded that he release less music. It ultimately led to him dropping his name, albeit temporarily, in favor of an unpronounceable symbol, with media referring to him as "the artist formerly known as Prince."

So it's no surprise that Prince was not known for being an advertising spokesman either, though what appears to be an impersonation of him was used in a Diet Dr. Pepper ad featuring "American Idol" star Justin Guarini.

His song, "Baby I'm a Star," however, was sung by Tina Turner for a Target ad:
