Media buyers couldn't stop singing the praises of this musical drama, which mixes elements of "Freaks and Geeks" with "High School Musical." Fox ran the first episode of the show last week after "American Idol" and will pair it with "So You Think You Can Dance" in the fall.
'MODERN FAMILY' ABC
Shot documentary-style à la "The Office," this sitcom is smarter and more sophisticated than others in the genre. ABC screened the entire pilot and had the room cheering. The show's part of a block of new Wednesday-night comedies that were well-received.
'NCIS: LOS ANGELES' CBS
It would be nice to see CBS make a success out of one of the quirky programs ("Love Monkey," "Swingtown") it's tried before, but in a time of uncertainty, there's one thing advertisers can generally rely upon: CBS procedurals bring in eyeballs.
How'd we do last year? Well, Ad Age picked two that will be back next season, Fox's "Fringe" and the CW's "90210," but we also picked TNT's "Trust Me," aka "Truth in Advertising," as a hit. It was not renewed.
Yet another in a never-ending series of sitcoms that can't even produce a funny clip. Fox won the prize last year, too, with "Do Not Disturb."
'THE FORGOTTEN' ABC
ABC finally gets on the crime-procedural bandwagon, with this drama focused on a bunch of amateur detectives trying to solve old murders. What if your odd neighbor's pastime was trying to figure out a 15-year-old killing, and no one showed up to watch?
'100 QUESTIONS' NBC
This midseason replacement combines elements of fondly recalled "Friends" and quickly canceled "Coupling." A young woman joins an online-dating site, forcing her to relive her most memorable dating moments. But we're not sure the audience will remember to tune in.
All three of Ad Age's picks last year -- CBS's "Worst Week," Fox's "Do Not Disturb" and ABC's "Life on Mars" -- were indeed canceled.
