'The Walking Dead' Debut Drew More Check-Ins than Any Other Premiere This Fall

In last week's chart tallying the top TV shows on entertainment check-in service GetGlue, we correctly predicted the CW's "Arrow" would make a splash on the chart (and boost "Supernatural" in the process). But we never predicted just how hard AMC's "The Walking Dead" would hit with its season premiere this week. Scroll down below the graphic for more notes and context.

  • The season premiere of AMC's "The Walking Dead" surpassed all expectations this week, rocketing to the top of the check-ins chart with the best numbers of any show this fall. The post-apocalyptic zombie drama, which kicked off its third season Sunday night in front of 10.9 million viewers, drew series-high ratings and was one of the most-watched premieres on TV this season among adults 18 to 49. It increased its ratings numbers more than 50% over last season's premiere, and it now holds the title of most watched telecast for any drama series in basic-cable history among all viewers, according to Nielsen. "The Walking Dead" joins AMC siblings "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" as a niche hit that enjoys both mainstream ratings numbers and consistent critical acclaim -- not to mention a gold star in social engagement.
  • This week's other big return belonged to the CW's "The Vampire Diaries," which kicked off it's fourth season on Thursday with ratings slightly up from last year's season premiere, and which managed to chart exceptionally high on a very competitive week. It was only slightly outpaced on the chart by ABC's "Once Upon a Time ," which drew almost three times as many total viewers.
  • The CW's has even more to celebrate this week. As we predicted last week, the debut of its new superhero drama "Arrow" made a strong social showing, and managed to give network veteran "Supernatural" a huge boost with its lead in. "Arrow" drew a relatively whopping 4.14 million viewers-the best ratings numbers of any telecast on the network in almost 3 years, according to Nielsen.
  • It also made Wendesday's episode of "Supernatural" the series' most watched episode in two years. Though these numbers will surely level off in the weeks to come, you can bet its social showing will remain strong; the show has the right mix of gloomy intrigue and sporadic action sequences that makes checking in irresistible.

  • The series that were most notably missing this week all riside in Fox's (usually) socially successful stable. "Fringe," now in its final leg, dropped off the chart from No. 7 last week; "Sons of Anarchy," finished its tumble from the top after clocking in last week and No. 8; and finally "Glee," which fell all the way off from the No. 5 spot just last week.
