In addition to perennial front-runner The New Yorker -- whose nine nominations is a fall-off from last year's 11 -- Time and Newsweek clocked in with five and four, respectively, reflecting the increased prominence of newsweeklies in the aftermath of Sept. 11.
Tying Time with five nominations was the Atlantic Monthly, which follows the four it claimed last year. Harper's Magazine won four nominations, and Esquire, GQ, Gourmet, and National Geographic Adventure claimed three each.
Last year, Esquire received eight nominations, second to the New Yorker, but took home only one "Ellie" award.
The sole multiple winner last year was the New Yorker, which won five Ellies, including one for general excellence.
The National Magazine Awards winners will be announced at Manhattan's Waldorf-Astoria on May 1.
