The New Yorker Again Leads Magazine Award Nominations

Ten for the Weekly; GQ Close Behind With Eight

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- The magazine industry is facing one of its toughest economic environments in a decade, but some assets, such as editorial excellence, can still be relied on. Conde Nast's New Yorker has banked another 10 nominations for National Magazine Awards, including another for general excellence. The New Yorker is the most honored magazine in the history of the awards, having received 187 nominations and 47 Ellies.

Conde Nast Publications fared extremely well, as a matter of fact. It's men's title, GQ, garnered eight nominations, the most it has ever received in a single year. Other Conde titles with multiple nominations include Bon Appetit (four), Wired (four), W (three), Gourmet (two) and Vanity Fair (two). Epicurious.com was nominated for an online award.

The American Society of Magazine Editors bestows the "Oscars" of the magazine world annually to identify the best editorial work of the past year. Twenty-six winners will be announced at a gala event on April 30, at New York City's Jazz at Lincoln Center in Frederick P. Rose Hall.

Another with an early lead for bringing home multiple Ellies -- the nickname for the Alexander Calder-designed, elephant-shaped trophies -- is New York magazine, which earned a nod for general excellence, as well as five other nods. New York recently pulled back its membership in the Magazine Publishers of America but kept its membership in ASME. Mansueto Ventures' Fast Company also earned a nomination without being a member of the MPA.

Other titles that earned multiple nominations include Hearst's Esquire (five), National Geographic (five), Active Interest Media's Backpacker (four), The New York Times Magazine (four), The Atlantic (three), Harper's Magazine (three), Mother Jones (three), Newsweek (three), Rodale's Runner's World (three), Time (three), The American Scholar (two), McGraw Hill's BusinessWeek (two), Fast Company (two), Bonnier's Field & Stream (two), Time Inc.'s Health (two), The Nation (two), Texas Monthly (two) and The Virginia Quarterly Review (two).

Of course, a nomination is no guarantee of solvency. Rodale's Best Life was a finalist in the magazine-section category, but just last week, Rodale announced that the May issue will be the magazine's last.
