After working as a director in theater and a maker of TV IDs and promos, Jonathan Glazer began directing commercials in 1993 when he joined Academy. "He is probably best known for his Guinness trilogy - "Swimblack," "Dream Club," and "Surfer" - which was awarded a Gold at Cannes, four Silvers at D&AD, and was voted the best ad of all time by the British public in the Channel 4 program The 100 Greatest TV Ads. Recent credits include Levi's "Odyssey," through Bartle Bogle Hegarty/London and a series of four commercials for Barclays Bank starring Samuel L. Jackson, via Leagas Delaney/London. Of his choice in commercials Glazer says, "When I started directing ads, I decided to only do work related to where my head is. People fascinate me and film is 100 per cent about people and our humanity. If a script doesn't say anything to me on a personal or emotional level, then it isn't worth doing. It's just cosmetic. There's a place for that, but not in my heart."
Glazer, who has produced groundbreaking videos for Radiohead, Blur and Jamiroquai, saw his first feature film Sexy Beast, starring Ben Kingsley and Ray Winstone, released last year to critical acclaim. It was nominated for Best British Film at this year's BAFTAs, while Kingsley was up for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Repped by CMP in the U.S., Glazer is presently immersed in his second feature, which he hopes to shoot later this year.
