The $6.6 billion stock purchase of modem giant U.S. Robotics by networking products marketer 3Com Corp. will create a tech advertiser with ad budgets totaling about $36 million. But the effect on agencies or possibility of consolidation is yet to be determined. U.S. Robotics' $25 million account is split among multiple agencies, including Leap Partnership, Chicago; LVL Advertising, Santa Clara, Calif; and Martha Felt Group, Salt Lake City. 3Com, which spent $10.8 million in '96 according to ad tracker Adscope, moved its account last year to Poppe Tyson, Mountain View.
