ABC plans news channel

ABC News unveiled details of a 24-hour news channel it plans to launch in early 1997. ABC said it plans to spend the next year cobbling together distribution arrangements for the channel on a non-exclusive basis with cable system operators, telecommunications companies and others, including direct broadcast satellite outfits. Capital Cities/ABC President-CEO Bob Iger said ABC already has interest from leading telcos and that DBS is not likely the ideal method of distribution, because it does not currently have the technical ability to insert local news programming from ABC affiliates and ads from local advertisers, an important component of ABC News 24-hour news concept.
