Academy Awards to Sunday night

Published on .

ABC said the Academy Awards telecast will move from Monday to Sunday night starting in 1999. Also, the show will start a half-hour earlier, at 8:30 P.M. (ET), with, for the first time, a national pre-show featuring star arrivals airing at 8 P.M. No mention was made of the Barbara Walters special that precedes the awards; most likely it will air at 7 p.m. More viewers watch TV on Sunday nights than any other night of the week. ABC said it retained exclusive broadcast TV rights for the Academy Awards through 2008.
