GM PICKS BRAND MANAGERS FOR EUROPE

[zurich] General Motors Corp. has appointed five brand managers for its car lines in Europe as part of a move toward brand management, a business practice used by its North American operation beginning in 1995. Klaus Leydecker, marketing director of Opel Gemany, was named brand manager of Astra. Regional sales manager at the same company, Brigitte Kroll-Thaller, will take charge of Omega and Vectra. Marketing director at Opel France, Rob Dargis, will head Sintra. John Bailey, zone manager of GM in Canada, becomes brand manager for Frontera, Monterey and light commercial vehicles. Vauxhall Marketing Strategy Director Andy Gilson becomes director of advanced marketing planning across all brands.

TIME WARNER TO SPONSOR BRAZIL CHANNEL

[rio de janeiro] Brazil on July 31 will launch its first private educational channel, sponsored by a group of companies that includes Time Warner. "Futura, the knowledge channel," will be operated by Globosat and Fundacao Roberto Marinho, both Globo organizations. Programming each day will run for 16 hours. Schools, prisons, libraries and universities will be helped by the sponsors to receive the signal.

BOZELL TO EXPAND 'FT' REACH

[london] Delaney Fletcher Bozell, London, has retained Financial Times' European advertising account and expanded it globally as parent Pearson announced it could invest $158 million over five years to boost the newspaper's international circulation. Saatchi & Saatchi and Young & Rubicam also pitched. The main thrust of the global expansion will be the U.S. As part of the initiative, Editor Richard Lambert will relocate to New York for 12 months. FT aims to boost its global circulation from 300,000 to 450,000.

PAPER PROJECTS ONTO PARLIAMENT

[london] M&C Saatchi here seized its one chance in five years on the evening of March 17 to project an ad for The Independent newspaper onto Britain's Houses of Parliament on the day that the Prime Minister announced a general election in the country. The ad, which was projected onto the building from St. Thomas' Hospital on the other side of the Thames River, read: "To Let. 5 year lease. For details see The Independent." It covered the main part of the building, excluding the Big Ben tower. It is part of a campaign to position The Independent as a truly independent paper during the run-up to the election on May 1.
