Ad director Camitz killed in car accident

Jhoan Camitz, 38, an award-winning commercial director, was killed in a freak car accident Aug. 10 in New York. Mr. Camitz was struck around 4:45 a.m. by a sport-utility vehicle whose driver had been fatally shot in a driveby shooting outside a SoHo nightclub. The driver, identified as 27-year-old Ivory Davis, was shot by another motorist and lost control of his vehicle, which jumped a curb and hit Mr. Camitz.

Mr. Camitz was represented by Satellite Films, a division of Propaganda Films, and directed commercials for Mastercard, Volvo, Lexus, Orangina and Smirnoff. His most notable work was for Diesel, Volkswagen and Nike. Last year, he won a gold Clio at the Clio Festival and a gold Lion at the International Advertising Festival in Cannes for the Nike spot titled "Meat." Mr. Camitz was known for a powerful visual style that contained a dreamlike quality. His productions looked very much like feature films. Mr. Camitz also directed music videos.

At the time of his death, Mr. Camitz was living in New York and he was bidding on an Ogilvy & Mather campaign for Jaguar cars.
