According to a new national poll, the image of advertising professionals has deteriorated in the last year when it comes to honesty and ethical standards.

Only 10% of those polled by the Gallup Organization rated ad people's ethics as "very high" or "high," just ahead of car salesmen, the perennial last-place finishers, who scored 9%. Ad professionals were slightly behind lawyers, at 18%.

Among Gallup's respondents, 51% rated ad professionals' ethics as "average" and 35% rated them as "low" or "very low."

Those numbers are a slight slide from a year ago, when 12% rated ad pros' ethics as "high" or "very high," 48% rated them "average" and 36% rated then "low" or "very low."

Nurses topped the poll again, with 79% of the vote, followed by grade-school teachers (73%), and pharmacists and military officers (72% each).
