Martyn Brewer, director of global sports marketing at Adidas International, says the alliance with Mr. Lomu will strengthen the company's global commitment to rugby, a sport in which it already sponsors a number of international players. The deal with Mr. Lomu is in recognition of his standing in the world of international sport and of his ongoing commitments to charitable and grassroots activities off the field of play, Mr. Brewer adds.
Mr. Lomu says he intends to represent and promote both Adidas and rugby to the highest possible level. "Adidas has shown faith in me and now I plan to repay that faith," he says.
