Adults 50-plus hear siren call of Internet

Published on .

American adults 50-and over are accessing music Web sites at twice the rate as the overall population, according to a study by Internet research consultancy Jupiter Media Metrix. Nearly 7 million Americans ages 50-plus visited music-related Web sites in June 2000, Media Metrix found, including genres such as music-entertainment, online retailers and multimedia software-download sites. Unique visitors 50 and older to these sites are up 92% from 3.5 million in June 1999, outpacing the overall U.S. population's growth of 45% to these music-related sites during the same period. The top sites: Real.com, with 2.7 million visitors; Windowsmedia.com, 966,000; Planetofmusic.com, 733,000; and MP3.com, 448,000.
