Adviser urges scrapping tobacco ad ban in Europe

Published on .

The top adviser to the European Court of Justice wants to scrap a directive banning tobacco ads and sponsorship in the European Union. Advocate General Nial Fennelly said last week that the new law, due to be phased in starting in July 2001, is a health issue that is meant to be dealt with at the national level. The European Court of Justice, which normally follows the advocate general's advice, will decide whether the law should be scrapped.
