Publicis, the fourth-largest ad holding company, scored No. 1 in 2005 worldwide new-business wins, adding $2 billion in net adjusted billings, according to Bear Stearns' Alexia Quadrani. Omnicom, the biggest player, came in close behind with gains of $1.9 billion. WPP, the sector's second-largest company, trailed with wins of $657 million. Struggling Interpublic, the third-largest agency company, lost about $1.8 billion in billings. Havas, fifth largest, added $33 million.

Focus on: Federated Department Stores (FD)

Consumers love to save (euphemism for spend) at discounters and online, so where's that leave traditional department stores? Ahead of trendy Target by one score: Federated Department Stores' stock has outperformed Target and Wal-Mart and is slightly behind since Federated a year ago struck a deal to buy rival May Department Stores for $11.7 billion. Federated is moving fast in 2006 to consolidate under two names (Macy's, Bloomingdale's) and make Macy's a truly national franchise.
