WPP stayed in first place in February's new-business tally as wins on Morgan Stanley, Hitachi and Six Flags offset a loss on Miller Lite, according to Bear Stearns' Alexia Quadrani. Focus on: SEARS HOLDINGS (SHLD)
Stock in Sears Holdings, after a hot streak and then months of listless trading, ended its first year 43› above where it started when Kmart bought Sears March 24, 2005. It's generating profits, but not necessarily sales; Kmart stores' fiscal '05 comp-store sales fell 1.2% while Sears stores' comp sales plunged 8.4%. The company says Sears' sales fell mainly because of an effort to improve gross margins by cutting back on promotions. That means less advertising.
