AFC picks up Starbucks rival

AFC Enterprises, Atlanta, parent of Chesapeake Bagel Bakery, Popeye's Chicken & Biscuits and Churchs Chicken, said it signed a deal to purchase Starbucks rival Seattle Coffee Co., operator of 66 cafes under the Seattle's Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia brands. The company also has a wholesale coffee business that includes serving some 1,500 supermarkets through a distribution deal with Procter & Gamble Co. Seattle Coffee relies on free-lancers for its $2 million marketing budget.
