(April 27, 2001) -- AFLAC, the supplemental insurance company, will unveil a wacky new spot on ABC's Wide World of Sports 40th anniversary show Sunday.

The spot intercuts authentic ABC Sports footage with duck footage from the ongoing AFLAC campaign and plays off the famous "The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" lead-in to the sports show.

For example, there is a scene of figure skating competitions, which then cut to the duck kicking a dangerous hockey puck in their direction. There is another clip of the duck in a sauna; a man steps on his foot by mistake and the shot cuts to the slogan: "The agony of defeat."

AFLAC is a presenting sponsor of the show. There will also be an eight-second AFLAC lead-in to run after the first commercial break, as well as an AFLAC trivia question feature, which will appear before a commercial break. The answer will be revealed in the next commercial break.

The Kaplan Thaler Group in New York created the AFLAC duck, who shows up in dangerous situations to remind people of the benefits of having supplemental insurance.

The current campaign currently has five spots, "Airport," "Park Bench," "Bed," "Steam Room," and "Wrestling," each of which will air during the special. -- Richard Linnett
