AltaVista lays off 25% of work force

Published on .

AltaVista Co., majority-owned by CMGI, is restructuring its business, eliminating 25% of its work force, much of it related to its media portal business, in the process. AltaVista also is consolidating its four California offices into one in Palo Alto, Calif. To reach profitability by the end of January 2001, the company also is refocusing its business on search services only. The restructuring could enable AltaVista to go ahead with an initial public offering the company postponed earlier this year.
