Amazon.com places holiday sales bet on catalogs

Amazon.com is mailing consumers Holiday 2000 Gift Book catalogs, one of several marketing strategies aimed at increasing traffic to the Web retailer. The company has launched a series of new holiday features on its site including the "Delight-o-meter," which tracks the number of items ordered from Amazon sites worldwide (amazon.com, amazon.fr, amazon.co.uk, amazon.de and amazon.co.jp ), including items ordered from its co-branded site with ToysRUs.com. Amazon's 24-page catalog highlights a few products from each of Amazon's stores, as well as some products from partners Drugstore.com and Ashford.com. The catalog does not provide any kind of order form, instead directing customers to Amazon's Web site. This is the second year Amazon has sent out a holiday catalog.
