Amazon.com's sales up 79%

Amazon.com reported third-quarter sales of $638 million, up 79% from sales of $356 million in the third quarter of 1999. Meanwhile, Amazon reported a third-quarter loss of $68 million, compared to $79 million in the third quarter of 1999. Amazon's stock dropped 1.46% to close the day at $29.56 on Tuesday. The e-tailer reported that for the first time its electronics store had grown to become the second-largest area of its site, behind books and ahead of music.
