Amazon.com takes stake in online sports retailer

Published on .

Online retailer Amazon.com has taken a significant minority stake in Gear.com, a site that sells brand name sporting goods at discounted prices. The site offers closeout sports merchandise resulting from overproduction, a change of style, color or function, and the cancellation of preseason orders placed by retailers. Amazon.com, which began selling books online, has expanded into many categories over the last year, including music, videos and gifts.
