America Online goes after Latin America

America Online, Dulles, Va., is partnering with Cisneros Group of Cos., New York, on a joint Latin America online service. Cisneros, which owns entertainment, media and telecommunications companies, will chip in an initial $100 million to fund the local service aimed at Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking users. The services will be rolling out in Brazil, Mexico and Argentina with other companies to follow. To date, StarMedia Network has been the major online service in Latin America.
