America Online network has major outage

Published on .

America Online, Vienna, Va., experienced 19 hours of down time Wednesday. None of the online service's six million members were able to access AOL during this period..

The service went down at 4 a.m. (ET) while undergoing routine maintenance and software installation, but did not come back up on schedule. Chairman and CEO Steve Case issued a statement explaining the problems and assuring subscribers that their accounts would be credited for the day of lost service.

"This was a very unfortunate occurrence and I don't want to make light of that," he said, "But it did have an interesting side effect: it reminded all of us how important AOL is becoming in our everyday lives."
