American, TWA cleared to merge flier programs

Published on .

American Airlines and TWA received government clearance to start merging their frequent-flier programs, making the airlines marketing partners as they proceed with plans for American to take over the struggling St. Louis-based TWA. Member of American's AAdvantage program are now able to earn program miles when they fly on TWA, while program members starting March 15 will be able to use their miles for free flights on TWA. So far, TWA frequent fliers will not be able to redeem miles on American. But American has promised to give TWA Aviators members credit for their miles in AAvantage if their merger goes through.
