Ameritech donates $2M to Library

Published on .

Ameritech is donating $2 million to the Library of Congress to establish a grant program through which selected libraries can digitize their Americana collections for incorporation into the Library's National Digital Library program. The Library of Congress plans to have 5 million--of a total 110 million items--on its Web site. The site already sports about 40,000 items including hand-written drafts of the Declaration of Independence, original photos of the Civil War, original notebooks belonging to poet Walt Whitman and clips of the first motion pictures developed by Thomas Edison. In addition to an ad in The Wall Street Journal announcing its donation, Ameritech will also hotlink to the Library of Congress.
