Ameritech, IBM to try high-speed access in Chicago

Ameritech Corp. and IBM Corp. next month will begin a customer trial using new technology called asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) in Chicago. ADSL a technology allows customers to interact with data networks and the Internet at speeds more than 50 times faster than an ordinary telephone line. Since the technology utilizes a portion of a customer's existing phone line, there is no requirement for a telephone number change.
