Ameritech offers long-distance

Published on .

On the heels of the telecommunications bill becoming law, Ameritech, a regional Bell company, on Monday began offering long-distance service to cellular customers in Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin and Michigan. Ameritech will use direct mail and point of purchase material to market the service to its 1.9 million cellular customers.

"We're focusing on expanding offerings to our existing cellular customers before we market directly to new customers," said John Rooney, president of Ameritech Cellular Services. The company doesn't expect to offer traditional wireline long-distance service until yearend.
