AOL to launch in Japan

Published on .

America Online will open a Japanese version of its service April 15 in conjunction with Mitsui & Co. and Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei). The service will cost about $8 per month for 3 hours, plus $4 for each additional hour. New subscribers will get the first 10 hours of the first month free--a marketing plan similar to one AOL used in the U.S. before switching last year to flat-rate pricing.

In addition to Japan, AOL operates in the U.K., France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and Canada.
