AOL, MCI to launch online gaming services

Published on .

WorldPlay Entertainment, a property of American Online Studios, Tuesday announced that WorldPlay would be the main programmer for games on the AOL Games Channel. Formerly known as the ImagiNation Network, WorldPlay is forming partnerships with online providers to have preferred distribution. In addition to AOL, it will partner with the EarthLink Network, AT&T WorldNet Service and other major ISPs. AOL members can play the games at WorldPlay during a free trial period through mid-July, after which the service will cost $1.99 per hour.

In related news, MCI is launching a nationwide online gaming service called Wireplay in October. The network gaming service will be available exclusively to MCI Internet customers in approximately 60 cities across the country. During the limited launch period, Wireplay will be a free part of the MCI Internet service package.
