AOL opens SF 'city'

Published on .

America Online's Digital Cities unit opened a San Francisco-themed community, its third after Boston and Washington. Digital Cities are accessible through AOL and provide local news, weather and traffic, sports info, restaurant listings and classified advertising.

AOL plans to launch cities in more than 20 U.S. markets. The company is one of many to participate in the trend toward local themed online content. AT&T, Microsoft and another venture called City Search all are working on similar efforts, as are several local newspaper companies.
