AOL unveils free service in U.K.

Published on .

America Online unveiled plans to offer a free Internet service called Netscape Online in the U.K. starting next month. Netscape Online will be targeted at businesses. AOL Europe's move raises the ante in the U.K., where Freeserve, the world's first commercially successful free ISP, took the market by storm, snapping up more than 1 million subscribers in its first six months. The growth rate of Freeserve has prompted a spate of local fee-based ISPs to stop charging subscribers. In response, the U.K. has become Europe's fastest growing Internet market.
