Apple reconfigures North America

Apple Computer, Cupertino, Calif., announced formation of Apple North America, a new geographic division including Apple USA and Apple Canada subsidiaries. James J. Buckley, 45, senior VP of Apple Computer and former president of Apple USA, becomes president of Apple North America. Peter Jones remains president, Apple Canada, and VP, Apple Computer.

The Miami Herald to cut 200 jobs by Jan. 1 The Miami (Fla.) Herald will cut 200 jobs by Jan. 1 and reorganize and consolidate some editorial sections in hopes of cutting $32 million in the face of rising newsprint costs and increased competition from electronic media. A third of the job cuts have already come through attrition, with 40 more coming from advertising and circulation and 75 from production. The paper also plans to increase database marketing, online services and promotion, and cut news and feature space by 5%.
