NEW YORK-Advertising Age columnist Bob Garfield and Detroit Bureau Chief Raymond Serafin have been honored by the American Society of Business Press Editors for Excellence in Editorial.

Mr. Garfield, 39, was awarded first place in the Regular Column category of the ASBPE's annual competition for his Ad Review work, appearing weekly between May and August 1993.

"The quality of writing is top notch as is the presentation and interpretive value. The judges rated this column near perfect in the scoring," said Mary Ann Falkman, past national president of ASBPE and contest chairman.

Mr. Serafin, 46, was awarded third place in the Case History category for his Sept. 12, 1993, analysis, "Think small: The stunning decline of Volkswagen in the U.S."

"This took extensive research to tell a `big story'-pun intended," Ms. Falkman said. "As a case history, this is an excellent, entertaining piece."
